Olbia has grown a lot in the last thirty years but it is a city with very ancient origins. The archaeological sites testify to the presence of an important Nuragic civilisation during the Bronze Age, as well as the existence of a city built by the Punics and that developed alongside the Romans until the Middle Ages.
The excursion organised by Ape Romantic Tour covers the most important milestones that have made the region of Sardinia famous around the world. Onboard our Tuk-Tuk or Minivan you will visit the various monuments included in the itinerary:
The Basilica of S.Simplicio, an imposing Romanesque church made entirely of granite, its origins date back to three construction periods throughout the 11th and 12th centuries.
The Roman Aqueduct, one of the most important testimonies of Roman history in Olbia and which represents one of the most significant developments in infrastructures of that period. In fact, the aqueduct allowed the supply of water from the nearby Mount "Cabu Abbas" (the name itself identifies the presence of rich springs) to the city centre.
Not far from the aqueduct is the Roman Cistern, used for the conservation of rainwater, which is also an important architectural testimony of the Roman period.
The Sacred Well "Sa Testa"
dating back to the Nuragic era (end of the Bronze Age), represents one of the most significant testimonies of this culture due to the importance the Nuragics gave to the worship of water.
The Castle of "Pedres", perched on a small rocky hill a few kilometres from the city of Olbia, dates back to the 14th century. It was built for defensive purposes and has a 360 ° view of the surrounding area.
The Tombs of the Giants
"Su Mont'e e S’Abe" is a monument from the Nuragic era which represents an ancient common burial site. There are several monuments of this type in Sardinia which have the exact same structural characteristics; however, the one in Olbia is twenty-eight meters high, making it the largest on the island.
